Celebrating 90 Years of “We’ll Take Care of You”
OGDEN, UT — May 13, 2026 – Goldenwest Credit Union proudly marks 90 years of service today, a milestone made possible by the loyalty and trust of its members. From humble beginnings in Ogden during the Great Depression to becoming one of the region’s strongest financial institutions, Goldenwest’s story has always been about people helping people.
Founded on May 13, 1936, as the Ogden Railway and Depot Company Employees Federal Credit Union, Goldenwest began with just $10.50 in assets. The early years required patience and faith. Savings accumulated slowly, and members sometimes waited for funds to become available for loans. In 1939, during a particularly difficult period, the Credit Union was on the brink of closing. Then, a member stepped forward with a $200 deposit, an amount an early officer described as feeling like “a million dollars.” That act of commitment and belief not only saved the Credit Union but also reaffirmed the cooperative spirit that continues to define it today.
Ninety years later, Goldenwest’s headquarters remains just a few miles from where it all began. Now serving more than 210,000 members through 50 branches across Utah and Idaho, and managing $4 billion in assets, the Credit Union continues to grow while staying true to its founding purpose.
To celebrate this milestone, Goldenwest hosted member appreciation events at each of its branches on May 13 and released a commemorative video featuring messages from its fourth president, Kerry Wahlen, and its fifth president, David Butterfield, who will assume the role of President/CEO on July 1, 2026.
As Goldenwest Credit Union looks to the future, it remains committed to the same values that guided its founding 90 years ago, including people helping people, financial strength, and community outreach. With a legacy built on trust and service, Goldenwest is well-positioned to continue meeting the evolving needs of its members while honoring the promise that has defined it for generations: “We’ll Take Care of You."
