As the holidays approach, we become more focused on giving. Sharing your good fortune with others is a charitable thing to do. Unfortunately, there are a few ill-intentioned people who wish to exploit the kind-heartedness of others through charity scams. How can you determine if the charity you wish to support is genuine?

Here are a few indicators that should be red flags when you are being asked to contribute:

1. The organization doesn't provide detailed information about its mission, expenses, or how your donation will be utilized.

2. The organization isn't able to provide proof that your contribution is tax deductible.

3. The solicitor urges you to act quickly, not allowing you time to research the charity.

4. The solicitor pushes you to make a cash donation or to wire money.

In order to ensure your donations are being used correctly and beneficially, you can:

1. Get the name of the organization and do some research. Looking up the name of an organization online is a great way to learn about its reputation.

2. Avoid giving out personal financial information, including credit card numbers, bank accounts, or social security numbers. This information could put you at risk for fraud.

3. Pay for your donations with a check made out to the organization itself, not the solicitor.

4. Be wary of individuals who contact you via email, claiming to be spokespersons soliciting for a charity.

Take the steps necessary to ensure that your monetary gifts are being distributed as you desire, and benefiting a legitimate cause. For more information on how to protect your personal information, visit our security page
