Before you fire up the grill, take a few minutes to review these essential safety guidelines:

  1. Grill in a Safe Location
Always place your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, garage, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Grills should never be used indoors or in enclosed areas like a garage or covered patio.
  2. Check for Leaks
If you use a gas grill, check the hose for leaks before each use. You can do this by applying a soap and water solution to the hose and turning on the gas (without lighting it). If you see bubbles, you have a leak.
  3. Clean Your Grill Regularly
Grease buildup is a common cause of grill fires. Clean the grates and tray after each use to reduce flare-ups and improve the taste of your food.
  4. Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby
Have a Class B fire extinguisher on hand—and know how to use it. Never use water to put out a grease fire!
  5. Supervise Kids and Pets
Create a “kid-free zone” around the grill (at least 3 feet) and keep pets at a safe distance. It only takes a second for accidents to happen.
  6. Use Long-Handled Tools and Heat-Resistant Gloves
Avoid burns and splatters with the right tools for the job. Long tongs, spatulas, and insulated gloves can help keep you safe while flipping burgers.

What Does BBQ Have to Do with Insurance?

While no one plans for accidents, being prepared with the right coverage can make all the difference if something goes wrong.

Homeowners or Renters Insurance:
Did you know that if your grill accidentally starts a fire and damages your deck or siding, your homeowners policy may help cover the cost of repairs? Likewise, if a guest is injured at your BBQ, liability coverage can help protect you financially.

Umbrella Insurance for Extra Protection:
For larger gatherings, umbrella insurance can offer added liability protection beyond what your standard policy covers—great peace of mind if you’re hosting lots of guests.
